Our Story

Ekklesia Iwigá is inspired by the rich heritage of the Old-Catholic Churches, which trace their origins to the early undivided church. Our history reflects devotion, resilience, and a commitment to living out the teachings of Jesus Christ. Recognized since the founding of the Union of Utrecht, our branch of Catholicism maintains its independence from Roman authority while upholding the apostolic tradition. We value our connection to the International Bishops' Conference, which fosters unity and collaboration among our global communities.

Ekklesia Iwigá: A Name with Deep Meaning

Our name, "Ekklesia Iwigá," reflects the heart and soul of our community. "Ekklesia," derived from Greek, signifies "assembly" or "gathering," representing our belief in the power of coming together in faith and fellowship. "Iwigá" comes from the Rarámuri language, spoken by the indigenous people of the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains in Mexico, and means "soul" in English.

For the Rarámuri, the soul is not limited to humans but is the life force that animates all living beings—humans, animals, plants, and even the earth itself. This reflects a worldview where all of creation is interconnected through this shared essence of life, the "iwigá."

The combination of "Ekklesia" and "Iwigá" represents our vision: a vibrant gathering of individuals, diverse in backgrounds and experiences, united by a shared journey of faith and the recognition of the sacred life force within all beings.
